Curriculum

Read below about homework, my feelings on worksheets, reading lessons, learning through play and a really great approach to understanding math. We use evidence-based curriculums that I've found complete success in.

Homework

Activity kits are chosen by the kids from our "Rainbow Baskets" to take for homework. Think of it like a library! It's a work-at-your-own-pace system so homework can stay at your house as long as needed to get it done. Why do we do this instead of paper work? We don't rely on worksheets to teach early ed. kids, TBH-I'm not a big fan. Worksheets are not developmentally appropriate at this age, in short because with worksheets, there is only 1 right answer and there is no need for higher-order thinking. Not to mention they can be frustrating and discouraging. We do have exceptions of course, and will use paper work to practice handwriting, once they've developed their fine motor skills to the point that they will be successful. Let's start your kiddo's education off with confidence and a love of learning!

Math

Our proven math curriculum is called "Count on Math" and it's amazing! Math concepts are taught through play in a sequential order that builds upon previous concepts. Our students learn fundamental math concepts with understanding, instead of relying on rote memorization. They learn without frustration and are set up for success in older grades when memorization is no longer enough. Some of the concepts they'll learn are: classification, pattern recognition, one-to-one correspondence, comparison of sets, measurement, data, numerals, shapes and more.

Pre-Reading/
Phonemics

As you've just read above with math, reading is also done best in a certain sequence. Rather than teach your children to memorize letters, we begin with listening skills to hear and differentiate letter sounds and how to blend them to make words. And as the students learn which letters make which sounds, they also begin remembering letter names and how to write them. During the second semester of the Pre-K class, you will have the opportunity to participate in an at-home program that will add to the classroom learning. This is an optional (free) program that will have you child reading fluently before kindergarten. Proven curriculums used in-class: "Heggerty Phonemics", "Zoo-Phonics", and "Distar Fast Cycle".

Social/Emotional

Social skills are practiced daily of course, during free play time. But we are also intentional and systematic in teaching actual skills. Our school uses the evidence-based "Second Step" program which starts the year with 'Learning Skills' like focusing attention and listening. Other units covered are 'Empathy', 'Emotional Management', 'Problem Solving', 'Being Assertive', 'Playing Fair', and more.

Schedule

Each day includes writing time, 2 LARGE GROUP circle times (max 20 min. unless there's lots of singing or a science project involved), 2-4 SMALL GROUP times (creative art, math, fine motor practice, phonics, etc.), and FREE PLAY times (Choice of 'centers'). ONE-ON-ONE time is done during free play time. We also incorporate 2 FOCUSED PLAY TIME (this might be puzzle time for everyone or math toys...working on a skill I'd like to improve, or a physical activity.

Holidays

Holidays and birthdays are a part of our classroom culture. Please consider that we may not be the right preschool for you if you do not celebrate. We use these special days to teach social skills like speaking in front of others, playing fair and giving. We also spotlight children as a way to encourage individuality and empowerment. Special days celebrated are: Birthdays, Halloween, Christmas, Valentine's Day, St. Patrick's Day, Mother's Day, Graduation and more.

Play

Play is at the center of our instruction because children learn best when they are mentally active, engaged, social, and can make meaningful connections to their lives (all characteristics of play). A play-based curriculum also activates the brain in meaningful ways that rote memorization and worksheets do not. Plus it's fun and children should love to learn! Everything we do is either hands-on or interactive.
